At the League of Women Voters, we believe democracy works best when everyone participates. As a volunteer, you can work on crucial issues impacting our elections and democracy. Whether helping register new voters or advocating for fair and transparent redistricting, your efforts will directly impact your community.

WAYS To

  • Beware of misinformation. Red flags include single or anonymously sourced reporting, anti-science views, opinions disguised as facts, views expressed by people with little or no expertise.

  • Experts on particular topics (e.g., The Supreme Court, crime, political races) on social media, blogs, and podcasts.

stay in the know

Get your news from a wide variety of trusted news sources and think critically about them.

 

  • Well-respected national and local newspapers with good sourcing.

  • Look for local news sources (and support them!)

Join Activist Groups

  • Interest-based or political groups to support causes that are important to you.

  • Local groups that may arrange travel to DC or places with critical elections, write letters/phone bank, etc.

  • Join your local Community Board.

Participate in Government elections

  • Get to know who your representatives are and call or write them with your views on issues.

  • Volunteer for a campaign.

  • Canvas voters/knock on doors in the SouthCoast and beyond.

  • There are many, including but not limited to democracy, civil rights for all, climate change, election integrity, voting access, affordable housing, and education.

Consider What Issues You Care Most About

  • Educate yourself on those issues from reliable sources.

  • Get to know like-minded people and organizations, but also the perspectives of the opponents.

  • Fight for those issues!

  • Search along the lines of Get Out the Vote campaigns or mail postcards to voters.

  • Non-partisan Get Out the Vote campaigns.

  • Partisan or issue-based: Local elections or ballot initiatives all over the country.
