Christy Miranda-Inestroza, a student at Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School and one of the League of Women Voters SouthCoast new student members, received a personal achievement award for exceptional leadership and a StubHub gift certificate from League Co-President Kris Eastman on Wednesday, December 13, 2023.
A perfect example of an engaged citizen, Ms. Miranda-Inestroza understands that citizen participation matters for a healthy and vital democracy. “She learned about the electoral process via New Bedford’s Elections Commissioner Mr. Manuel DeBrito,” said Voter Services Coordinator Ms. Phoebe Girard, who also noted that Ms. Miranda-Inestroza worked at the polls during the last city-wide elections.
Ms. Yasmin Flefleh-Vincent, a teacher at the school, along with several students guided League members to the school cafeteria. While meeting with students and registering them to vote in the cafeteria, League leaders talked about the importance of voting, civic engagement, and employing well-informed discourse when addressing community issues.
“Well-informed discourse strengthens our democracy,” LWVSC Co-chair Susan Spooner said, “and it also produces personal empowerment by helping people.”
LWVSC agreed civic engagement and uniting around a shared purpose can build trust, empathy, human connections, and a strong support system for resolving problems.
